CBS Kicks Off Sports-Messaging Service

9/27/2006 8:46 AM Eastern

CBS Digital Media is literally widening its content message, this time offering a new sports-alert service that sends breaking news, headlines and fantasy updates directly to viewers’ cellular phones.

CBS SportsLine TO GO is the third in a series of mobile-news-alert services CBS has launched, following the CBS News TO GO and entertainment-oriented ET TO GO services that debuted in March.

It’s part of an evolving strategy to reach TV viewers even when they are not in front of their home TV sets, according to Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports.

"'With CBS SportsLine TO GO, we can reach millions of sports fans by sending the latest sports news and information available to their cell phones,” he added.

The service is available through most major mobile carriers. To sign up, users can text-message CBS using the keyword SPORTS and short code 99888 -- the latter essentially the text-messaging equivalent of a phone number. From there, they can opt to receive sports alerts related to their favorite teams, sports or players for a 99-cent monthly fee added to their cell-phone bill.
