Flavor of the Week: Microsoft Boosts Xbox Content

THE HYPE: Microsoft is stocking
up the Xbox 360 video
smorgasbord with 35 more
content partners worldwide,
including ESPN’s WatchESPN;
Univision Communications;
Viacom’s Nickelodeon,
Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures; and The
Weather Channel. Xbox also will provide access to
Internet-video subscription packages for out-ofmarket
games from the NBA and the NHL.

The deals should enhance Xbox’s
profi le as a source for all varieties of
TV and video content, adding to existing
partners such as Comcast, HBO
Go, Verizon FiOS, Epix and YouTube.
But fundamentally, Microsoft’s strategy
here is to embrace and extend
pay TV — not to try to kill it.
