CNN Tops in Cable DNC Ratings

Cable News Network put up some solid Nielsen numbers with its first night of coverage from the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

The network outdelivered rival Fox News Channel in total viewers and among adults 25-54 in primetime. From 8 p.m.-11 p.m. Monday, CNN was watched on average by more than 2 million viewers, versus 1.64 million for Fox News and 1.14 million for MSNBC, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

CNN’s performance Monday night was 14.5% ahead of the 1.75 million who watched the first night of the DNC in 2000. Fox News grew its base 306% from the 404,000 who watched its coverage that evening four years ago, while MSNBC saw viewers advance 88% from 607,000, according to Nielsen data.

Total viewership numbers also skewed well for CNN relative to conventions in the past decade. In 1996, CNN pulled some 1.47 million viewers on the first night of that DNC. Four years earlier, when Bill Clinton was seeking his first round in the White House, CNN attracted 1.89 million viewers to its DNC opening-night coverage, according to a network spokeswoman.

Among adults 25-54, CNN was first among the cable news services Monday, as well, averaging 601,000 viewers in primetime compared with 546,000 for Fox News and 382,000 for MSNBC.
