USA Edges Disney in 1Q Primetime Ratings

USA Network kicked off the new year in first place in the primetime ratings, inching ahead of Disney Channel in the first quarter, according to Nielsen Media Research data released Tuesday.

USA posted a 2.2 household rating, the same as it did in the same quarter last year, according to a Disney ABC Cable Networks analysis of Nielsen data. Disney ranked second with a 2.1 rating, also flat compared with the first quarter of last year.

Among cable services, A&E Network, Fox News Channel and Court TV posted especially strong showings in the first quarter.

TNT came in third for the quarter with a 1.6 rating, a 20% decline compared with the first quarter of last year. Its sister service, TBS, and Fox News tied for fourth place in primetime, each racking up a 1.4 rating. TBS slipped 7% from a 1.5 while Fox News was up 8% from a 1.3 a year ago.

Those networks were followed by Lifetime Television and A&E, which each posted a 1.3 rating. Lifetime was down 7% from the year-ago first quarter’s 1.4, while A&E was up a whopping 44% from a 0.9.

Cartoon Network, Nick at Nite and Hallmark Channel each averaged a 1.2 rating. Cartoon was down 14% in the first quarter versus the same period last year, while Nick at Nite dropped 20%. Hallmark Channel saw a 9% gain.

FX and Court TV each garnered a 1.1 rating. FX was flat while Court TV enjoyed a sizable 38% increase. It was Court TV’s most-watched quarter ever.

Discovery Channel, ESPN, Spike TV and AMC each registered a 1.0 rating. Discovery saw an 11% gain; ESPN was down 29%; Spike TV was down 9%; and AMC was up 25%.
