DTV Plan Not on FCC Meeting Agenda

11/02/2004 9:45 AM Eastern

The Federal Communications Commission won’t be voting at its Nov. 9 open meeting on a plan to end the digital-TV transition Dec. 31, 2008, according to the meeting agenda released Tuesday night.

FCC staff indicated weeks ago that a vote on the digital-TV plan would likely be postponed until December.

However, the agenda includes a long-awaited vote on pre-emption of state regulation of a certain class of voice-over-Internet-protocol providers. Included in that group is Vonage Holdings Corp., which transmits calls over the public Internet and allows consumers to use the same phone number from any broadband connection.

Cable companies have been lobbying the FCC to include cable VoIP services in the Vonage ruling.
