FCC Pushes Back AWS Auction Start

5/22/2006 6:09 AM Eastern

Bidders for the upcoming advanced-wireless-services spectrum auction will have a little more time to prepare thanks to a Federal Communications Commission decision to push back the start date from June 29 to Aug. 9.

The auction -- which will offer up 90 megahertz of spectrum for broadband and cellular uses -- is expected to draw from a wide range of bidders. Already, the consortium of cable operators working with Sprint Nextel Corp. -- Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications Inc., Comcast Corp. and Bright House Networks -- jointly filed an application to take part in the auction should they choose to do so.

The commission voted to delay the auction to give applicants more time to prepare. The FCC voted 3-1 for the extension, with commissioner Jonathan Adelstein dissenting.

In addition to moving the start date for the auction, the FCC also extended the bidder application deadline to June 19.
