NUVOtv Restructures Content Team, Preps Comedy Show

Former Comedy Central, BBCA Exec Bill Hilary to Head Programming 3/20/2013 7:01 AM Eastern

Cable veteran Bill Hilary has been tapped to head up programming at NUVOtv, the Los-Angeles based network targeting younger U.S. Hispanic viewers.

Hilary, a former executive vice president and general manager at Comedy Central and president of BBC America, started work in early February and is already developing new programs, including the upcoming comedy series Stand Up & Deliver!, set to premiere April 2.

“I decided to move across the country because I believe nuvoTV has a unique proposition to target the Modern American Latino,” Hilary told Hispanic TV Update in an interview. Prior to moving to Venice Beach, Calif., Mr. Hilary, a self-described “boy from Belfast,” lived in New York.

Maria Perez-Brown, who had led NUVOtv’s programming since 2007, has left the company.

As head of programming, Hilary is responsible for all aspects of NUVOtv content, including development, production, acquisitions and scheduling. He is expected to work closely with nuvoTV’s new creative and business partner, Jennifer Lopez, and her TV-production company, Nuyorican Productions.

Immediately upon joining NUVOtv, Hilary hired Lynnette Ramirez as vice president of programming. She had been a senior vice president of development at comedian George Lopez’s production company, George Lopez Presents. Another new hire is Sara Auspitz, a former executive at Endemol and Turner.

“My job is to believe in the audience and assemble the best team ever to create quality content,” said Hilary, who developed the Emmy-nominated Chappelle’s Show while at Comedy.

NuvoTV has declined to discuss specifics involving Lopez’s involvement with the channel’s programming until its upfront in New York on May 15. But nuvoTV CEO Michael Schwimmer has said the partners are working together on an overhaul of “the look and feel” of nuvoTV to reflect her involvement.

In fact, an upfront save-the-date invitation sent out this week to ad agencies features a photo of Lopez and the text: “Join NUVOtv and Jennifer Lopez as they present an exciting new vision in entertainment for the modern Latino experience.”

nuvoTV last year secured an additional $40 million from current investors, which network plans to use to support Lopez’s efforts. NUVOtv is available in more than 31 million homes through such affiliates as AT&T, Comcast, Cox Communications, Dish Network and Verizon Communications.
