Strategy Chief Reed Exits CableLabs

CableLabs is losing 18-year veteran David Reed, the R&D consortium’s chief strategy officer, who oversaw key programs including DOCSIS development.

Reed will leave the MSO-owned company at the end of September. A CableLabs spokeswoman confirmed his resignation but otherwise declined to comment. Sources did not indicate what he may be planning to do next.

Reed’s departure comes after CableLabs named Phil McKinney, formerly chief technology officer of HP’s personal systems group, as president and CEO in May. McKinney replaced Paul Liao, the former Panasonic CTO who had run the laboratory since June 2009.

McKinney is “rearranging the furniture” rather than looking to dramatically shake up the CableLabs management team, according to source. Since taking over, McKinney reversed a rule Liao had instituted requiring employees to be evaluated on a “bell curve,” sources said.

At CableLabs, Reed was responsible for leading research and development on projects including DOCSIS, business services, advanced advertising and Tru2way.
