Samir Armaly to stay with TiVo, focus on company’s remaining tier 1 renewal (Updated) 6/16/2017 3:16 PM Eastern Last updated at 6/16/2017 4:50 PM

TiVo has appointed Arvin Patel to executive vice president and chief intellectual property (IP), effective in Q3, where he’ll head up all facets of the company’s patents and licensing business.

Patel reports to TiVo CEO Tom Carson, who plans to retire.

Patel most recently was chief IP officer at Technicolor, previously was SVP of IP and licensing at Rovi, which merged with TiVo last fall, and was the global head of IBM’s IP strategy group.

Patel succeeds Samir Armaly, who will stay with TiVo and move into a newly-created role, reporting to Carson, where he’ll be responsible for “seeing the last remaining Tier 1 renewal through to completion.” Armaly, a 15 year vet of Rovi/TiVo, will also ensure a seamless transition of the IP business to Patel, and advise Carson and the TiVo board on “relevant IP matters,” the company said.

TiVo didn’t name that tier 1 by name in the announcement, but Comcast is the last big one left on TiVo’s current list of renewals.

Update: TiVo confirmed that Comcast is the tier 1 being referenced.

TiVo and Comcast have been battling in the courts, but there’s speculation that Comcast will be forced to settle after an initial determination by the International Trade Commission that Comcast had violated two TiVo patents. A final ruling is expected in September.

“With the recent achievements of our IP licensing business and the completion of several long-term agreements with many of our largest customers, the time is right for priming the business for the next phase of growth,” Carson said in a statement. “The opportunity for our IP licensing business remains strong, and I believe we are optimally positioned to capitalize on that opportunity with Arvin as our new leader combined with Samir’s continued involvement with the company.”
