'Classroom’ Taps Soulé as Chief3/27/2005 7:00 PM Eastern
Washington— Cable in the Classroom has found a new principal.
The cable industry’s education foundation has named Helen Soulé executive director. The current chief of staff to the assistant secretary of postsecondary education at the U.S. Department of Education succeeds Peggy O’Brien, who left last fall to join the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Soulé will begin her new job April 11. She brings a quarter-century of experience at all levels of education, from kindergarten to post-secondary schooling. She is a nationally renowned education-technology expert, and she has been honored by national organizations and the media, as both a pioneer and a visionary educator, CIC officials said.
“This is a fabulous opportunity to utilize my experience in service of a great industry that is committed to education,” Soulé said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to leading Cable in the Classroom in its efforts to support and enhance education in homes, schools and communities through the cable industry’s digital-broadband services.”
At the DOE, Soulé has overseen the day-to-day operations of the office of postsecondary education, advising department senior staff on matters related to postsecondary-education programs and policies, technology and teacher quality.
In addition, she led the development and production of the secretary’s annual report on teacher quality and served on the executive team that developed the recently published National Education Technology Plan.
As director of educational technology for the Mississippi Department of Education, Soulé guided the development of the Mississippi Master Plan for Educational Technology, creating a comprehensive technology training program for teachers, and she received two U.S. Department of Commerce grants, “Connecting Communities” and “Connect-2-Tomorrow,” both of which involved building electronic communities.
Also during her tenure, the state’s K-16 data and video network and the first statewide student information system were established.
Soulé has been involved in the integration of educational technology since 1982, when she was a classroom teacher with the Meridian, Miss., school district. There she held a variety of posts, including teacher, curriculum assistant and director of elementary education
