Comcast Pa. Workers Vote on Union

11/12/2003 6:36 AM Eastern

The Communications Workers of America faces decertification by nearly 1,000 Pittsburgh-area Comcast Corp. employees following a vote Wednesday.

The National Labor Relations Board is supervising the vote, the results of which should be announced Nov. 18.

The employees are from Comcast systems in Allegheny and Washington counties.

About 700 employees took part in the vote Wednesday, and another 280 customer-service workers are scheduled to vote on the issue Monday.

The union alleged that the MSO is trying to sway employees with perks including picnics, Monday Night Football parties and profit-sharing checks, AP reported.

Comcast has 60,000 employees, but only some 2,700 belong to unions. The Pittsburgh-area workers’ union affiliation was inherited when the company merged with AT&T Broadband.

"We want our employees to have the opportunity to choose, and that is what the NLRB has given them," Comcast spokesman Brian Jeter told the AP.
