NEW YORK -Courtroom Television Network, which just acquired the rights to The Rockford Files
movies, plans to join the parade of basic-cable services creating original films, according to published reports last week.

Court TV, which has seen its primetime ratings multiply thanks to off-network shows such as Homicide: Life on the Street,
reportedly plans to unveil its proposed made-for-TV movies at the Television Critics Association tour Jan. 16. A network spokeswoman declined to comment on reports of its telepic plans last week.

A wide variety of basic cable networks-including TBS Superstation, Turner Network Television, FX, Lifetime Television, E! Entertainment Television, USA Network, Black Entertainment Television, MTV: Music Television, VH1, Disney Channel, Fox Family Channel and Odyssey-are now airing original movies in an effort to better brand their services.

Also last week, Court TV said it will air eight two-hour Rockford Files
telepics, based on the Emmy Award-winning TV series of the same name. The movies, which star James Garner as Jim Rockford and other members of the TV show's cast, will run on Court TV on Friday nights at 9 p.m.

The crime-and-justice network will debut the first Rockford
film on Jan. 5, with an additional movie set to air on each of the next five Fridays through Feb. 9. The remaining two movies will run in the fourth quarter next year.

"This is a classic series of detective movies, starring one of television's and Hollywood's most respected actors in his signature role," said Court TV executive vice president of programming and marketing Art Bell in a prepared statement. "This acquisition strengthens Court TV's commitment to the expansion of our library of top-quality, made-for-TV movies in the crime-and-suspense genre."

The Rockford Files
movies were originally produced for CBS and aired on the Tiffany Network between 1994 and 1999. The TV series had aired on Friday nights on NBC from 1974 to 1980.
