Malone Stands Alone

Liberty Media chairman John Malone is officially the largest individual landowner in the United States, ousting CNN founder Ted Turner - who had held the title since the 1990s - with the purchase of about 1 million acres of timberland in New Hampshire and Maine earlier this year.
According to the 2011 Land Report 100, Malone controls 2.2 million acres, edging out Turner, who owns about 2 million acres.
In a recent article in the Land Report, Malone credited Turner with giving him "this land buying disease" during a helicopter ride at the CNN founder's ranch. And though Turner wished his friend well on assuming the top spot among domestic land barons, Malone is looking to widen the gap. He has his eyes on a large parcel in the Northeast and Canada that would double his forestry holdings, according to the article.
