CES Looks To ‘Fill Void’Left by Supercomm

ARLINGTON, VA. — The Consumer
Electronics Association

announced that the 2011 International
Consumer Electronics
Show
will feature a new Telecom
Pavilion, which the trade
group said will “fill the void” left
by the demise of Supercomm.

In February, Supercomm
organizers announced the
cancellation of the 2010 event,
which had been scheduled for
late October in Chicago, citing
poor financial projections. That
marked the end of the telecommunications
trade show’s
run of more than two decades.

Next year’s CES, scheduled
to run Jan. 6-9, 2011, in Las
Vegas, will include a dedicated
exhibition area in the Las
Vegas Convention Center for
manufacturers of advanced
broadband equipment and
related products and services.
According to the CEA, the 2010
CES attracted all of the top 50
global telecommunications service
providers.

SCTE To Offer IPv6 CourseDeveloped With Cisco

EXTON, PA. — The Society of
Cable Telecommunications Engineers

will offer a seven-week
online course covering cable
operators’ migration to the
next-generation Internet Protocol,
IPv6, developed in partnership
with Cisco Systems.

The course, “IPv6: Impact on
Cable Networks,” will provide
an overview of the capabilities
and roles of IPv6 and DOCSIS
3.0 in the cable-network management
process.

The current Internet protocol
version, known as IPv4,
provides 4.29 billion unique
addresses. Those are expected
to be depleted as soon as the
fall of 2011, according to the
American Registry of Internet
Numbers. At that point, providers
will be forced to begin
more widely using IPv6, which
provides an astronomically
large address space of two to
the 128th power.

The SCTE’s IPv6 course, expected
to require between four
and six hours per week, will
begin May 24. Registration and
additional information is available
at http://www.scte.org/ipv6.
