Satellite Service WildBlue Finally Launches Satellite

After five years in existence, satellite-broadband service WildBlue Communications Inc. finally has a satellite.

The company’s bird was launched Saturday from French Guiana on an Ariane 5 rocket, AP reported.

Vice president of sales and marketing Brad Greenwald told AP WildBlue is targeting rural areas and small cities without cable-modem or digital-subscriber-line service.

The company originally planned to have two satellites in orbit by 2001, but it failed to raise enough capital due to the tech-industry slump, according to AP.

A group led by Liberty Satellite & Technology Inc invested $156 million in WildBlue last year, allowing it to complete work on the Boeing Co.-built Anik F2 launched Saturday and to start work on another satellite, AP reported.
