SS/L to Build PanAmSat Bird

Space Systems/Loral will build fixed-satellite-service bird “Galaxy 18” for PanAmSat Corp.

SS/L said the satellite will deliver 10 kilowatts of power over a 15-year lifetime and carry a total of 48 operating transponders -- 24 high-power Ku-band and 24 C-band transponders.

When it is delivered in 2007, Galaxy 18 will become PanAmSat's newest satellite covering the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, SS/L added. It will operate from PanAmSat's 123 degrees west orbital location.

“We are pleased to once again be selected by PanAmSat to build an important piece of its global network," SS/L president Patrick DeWitt said in a prepared statement. "Because of SS/L's cost-effective integration of advanced satellite features with high-performance, space-proven technology, PanAmSat will be able to deliver highly competitive and reliable services to their customers."
