AT&T Adds San Antonio To ‘GigaPower’ List

AT&T has committed to roll out its fiber-based, 1-Gig-capable “GigaPower” network to parts of San Antonio, a city that is also on Google Fiber’s list of potential expansion sites.

AT&T flirted with a potential expansion of GigaPower in San Antonio in April, about a month after San Antonio approved a long-term, master lease deal that will help to clear the deployment of 40 Google Fiber “fiber huts.

Time Warner Cable, which is in the process of being acquired by Comcast, is San Antonio’s incumbent cable service provider.

AT&T said locations and pricing for its GigaPower rollout in San Antonio will be announced at a later date.

AT&T announced Monday (July 28) that it will extend its GigaPower network to parts of Nashville, Tenn., where it tangles with Comcast. AT&T has already launched GigaPower-fueled services in pockets of Austin, Texas, and expects to do the same later this summer in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. The telco has also received approval for build out plans in six North Carolina cities, and has previously announced that it is exploring an expansion of GigaPower to as many as 100 additional cities across 25 markets.

AT&T has proposed to expand GigaPower to an additional 2 million customers as a condition of its pending acquisition of DirecTV.
