AT&T To Bring ‘GigaPower’ To Miami

AT&T's flurry of GigaPower announcements continued Tuesday with word that it will bring its fiber-based, 1-Gig-capable network to parts of Miami, where Comcast is the incumbent cable operator.

 

Per its recent string of GigaPower market announcements, AT&T said it will announce pricing and specific target areas at a later date. In addition to the city of Miami, AT&T is also considering GigaPower deployments in several nearby areas, including Hialeah, Hollywood, Homestead, Opa-Locka, and Pompano Beach.

 

If AT&T follows the blueprint established in Austin, Texas, where it is upgrading speeds from 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps for GigaPower, consumers can expect to pay $70 per month for a “Premier” plan that waives equipment, installation and activation fees, but requires customers to participate in a targeted advertising program called AT&T Internet Preferences, or $99 per month for a “Standard” tier that doesn’t include the targeted ad component.

 

AT&T launched GigaPower service to parts of Austin late last year and is nearing launches in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Here’s an updated list of other markets where AT&T has committed to deploy its GigaPower network, as well as the incumbent cable operators for each area:

In April, AT&T announced it was  exploring an expansion of GigaPower to as many as 100 additional cities across 25 markets. It has also proposed to expand GigaPower to an additional 2 million customers as a condition of its pending acquisition of DirecTV.
