AT&T Says ‘GigaPower’ Is a Go For Greensboro, Houston

AT&T said it will offer broadband speeds of up to 1 Gbps to parts of Greensboro, N.C., and Houston, Texas, through the deployment of its new fiber-based “GigaPower” network.

As it’s been with recent, similar commitments in other markets, AT&T said specific locations of availability and pricing for GigaPower services in the Greensboro and Houston markets will be announced at a later date. Time Warner Cable is Greensboro's incumbent cable operator. Comcast is the incumbent MSO in Houston, where it recently unleashed a set of speed upgrades for three residental broadband tiers.

In Austin, Texas, where AT&T has already begun to sell GigaPower, its stand-alone broadband service starts at $70 per month. The Austin version of U-verse with GigaPower is also capped at 1 terabyte per month. AT&T charges $10 for each additional bucket of 50 Gigabytes above that threshold, with a maximum monthly overage charge of $30.

Greensboro joins a growing list of markets where AT&T has committed to deploy GigaPower. Others on tap include Dallas and San Antonio, Texas; Overland Park, Kan.; Nashville, Tenn.; and a handful of other cities and towns in North Carolina, including Charlotte, Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Cary, Winston-Salem and Durham, N.C.

AT&T said it is also considering GigaPower deployments in several other North Carolina areas, including Apex, Garner, Gastonia, Huntersville, and Morrisville. Candidates for GigaPower buildouts in the Houston area include Galveston, Pasadena, Pearland, and Spring.

In April, AT&T announced it was  exploring an expansion of GigaPower to as many as 100 additional cities across 25 markets. It has also proposed to expand GigaPower to an additional 2 million customers as a condition of its pending acquisition of DirecTV.
