CableLabs Issues VoIP-Peering RFP11/22/2005 7:34 AM Eastern
Cable Television Laboratories Inc. issued a request for information Tuesday for technologies that would allow cable operators to share voice-over-Internet-protocol traffic over their networks.
VoIP peering would allow MSOs to save on interconnection costs as more of them roll out VoIP services. Operators could hand off VoIP calls to other MSOs and, thus, reduce public-switched-telephone-interconnection charges.
CableLabs set a rather quick Dec. 14 deadline for information from manufacturers and third-party service providers. Information is being sought on VoIP-peering architectures; Internet specifications and standards that will allow for development of a scalable platform for interconnecting voice and other communications services; and associated operations and management requirements.
