Cox Spreads WiFi Into Omaha

Cox Communications confirmed a report that the operator will light up hundreds of WiFi hotspots soon in Omaha, expanding on earlier deployments in Northern Virginia and parts of Connecticut.

According to The Omaha World Herald, Cox will turn up more than 500 hotspots on May 20 in areas such as Council Bluffs, downtown and midtown Omaha, and in Dundee and Benson. Cox will later extend its reach into Bellevue, Papillion, La Vista, Millard and northwest Omaha.

With the current crop of equipment factored in later this month, Cox will have deployed more than 2,000 hotspots, according to a Cox official. Cox is also a member of the Cable WiFi roaming alliance (Comcast, Cablevision Systems, Bright House Networks and Time Warner Cable are the others), which have collectively deployed more than 250,000 WiFi hotspots.

Cox provides access to its WiFi network to broadband customers of its Cable WiFi partners as well as to its own cable modem subs who take at least its Internet Preferred tier.
