Leichtman Research Group Inc. reported that cable and digital-subscriber-line providers each added 1.17 million high-speed-Internet subscribers in the first quarter of 2004 -- the first time the two groups were in a dead heat.
The combined 2.34 million subscribers lifted broadband penetration in the United States to 26.9 million homes, LRG said.
In the fourth quarter of 2003, cable enjoyed a slim 55%-45% advantage in new additions.
Cable now has 16.67 million high-speed-data subscribers, compared with 10.26 million for DSL.
