THE HYPE: The nation’s No. 1 retailer debuted the
industry’s first Internet-connected HDTV featuring
the TiVo user interface — but without the hallmark
digital video recorder features.
The televisions provide access
to broadband-delivered services
CinemaNow, YouTube and Pandora.
The TVs also come preloaded
with Chumby’s interactive
content network with apps for
Facebook, Twitter, Photobucket,
AccuWeather and Reuters.
WHAT IT MEANS: Best Buy is
hoping TiVo’s name recognition
rubs off on its house brand to help it stand out as
Internet connectivity in TVs becomes a commodity.
The lack of DVR functions may confuse shoppers,
though. In any case, the deal
shows TiVo remains a force to
be reckoned with, still riding high
after its $500 million patent
settlement with Dish Network
