Irdeto Acquires Antipiracy Firm BayTSP

10/24/2011 9:40 AM Eastern

Content-protection software provider Irdeto has acquired antipiracy monitoring firm BayTSP as it expands its menu of security services for media companies.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Privately held BayTSP, founded in 1999, provides services to most Hollywood studios, cable networks and videogame publishers with search and discovery services that identify and track unauthorized digital content.

Irdeto -- whose customers include Comcast, Sony and Toshiba -- said BayTSP's intellectual property and patent licenses complement its current portfolio and broaden its online monitoring, detection and antipiracy capabilities. In particular, Irdeto will look to combine BayTSP's managed services with its ActiveCloak for Media dynamic security software.

The deal adds another arrow to Irdeto's quiver to help Hollywood battle online pirates. This summer, Irdeto bought the group that developed the BD+ security technology for Blu-ray Discs from Rovi for up to $25 million in cash.

"The acquisition of BayTSP allows us to extend further our trusted, end-to-end security partnering offering for media companies, and also initiates a brand new area of growth into revenue-generating, business insights for our customers with the valuable media consumption data we now have access to," Irdeto CEO Graham Kill said in a statement.

BayTSP CEO Stuart Rosove will remain with Irdeto. BayTSP's 53 employees will remain located in Santa Clara, Calif., as well as its satellite offices.

Services offered by BayTSP include: identifying and tracking digital assets across all major Internet protocols; removing content and/or distributing cease-and-desist notices; and analyzing Internet media consumption.

Irdeto has nearly 1,100 employees in 25 locations worldwide, with its primary offices in Amsterdam and Beijing. The company is a subsidiary of Naspers, a multinational media conglomerate based in South Africa.
