Motorola Changes Name of Cable Unit

Motorola changed the name of the business unit that serves the cable industry, dropping the Connected Home Solutions moniker in favor of the new Home and Networks Mobility.

The company made the change “to recognize that they also offer wireless and mobility services to cable providers, in addition to the traditional ‘connected-home’ devices and network-infrastructure solutions,” according to Motorola spokeswoman Amy Valli.

The Home and Networks Mobility business unit also is increasingly catering to telephone companies, as Motorola fills out a portfolio of Internet-protocol-TV technologies. On Thursday, the company announced plans to acquire MPEG-4 compression startup Modulus Video.

Dan Moloney remains president of the unit, which is based in Horsham, Pa. The unit sold a record 4.9 million digital set-top boxes in the first three months of 2007, reporting sales of $1.04 billion, up 42% from the same period one year earlier.
