Study: Cable, DBS Will Drive DVR Shipments

3/30/2004 7:21 AM Eastern

Research firm IDC expects worldwide digital-video-recorder shipments to top 28 million in 2008, spurred largely by cable and direct-broadcast satellite.

"Initially, satellite providers emphasized DVR offerings to combat cable television’s investment in video-on-demand, and now cable is being forced to respond," IDC senior research analyst, consumer markets, video Greg Ireland said in a prepared statement.

"This strategy has done more in one year to advance the understanding and acceptance of DVRs than stand-alone options, such as TiVo [Inc.], had done in the previous five years," he added.

According to IDC, at the end of 2003, there were 3.2 million U.S. DVR households.
