5/13/2005 3:20 AM Eastern

Giacomo wasn’t the only big winner at the 131st Kentucky Derby.

TVG Network said Friday that it set a record one-day handle on Kentucky Derby day Saturday, May 7, of $6,397,203, $2,767,545 of which was wagered on the Derby itself.

Wagering via the Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc.-owned network rose 21% from last year’s Kentucky Derby day.

TVG also set a first-quarter record in 2005, processing wagers totaling $61,619,882, up 45% compared with the first quarter of 2004.

“We are encouraged by the consumer demand for TVG's television programming, high-quality horse-racing content and interactive-wagering platforms,” president Ryan O’Hara said in a prepared statement. “Once again, we televised six live on-site episodes of The Works leading up to the Derby and broke new exciting stories for racing fans.”
