Dish Serves Weather App On Set-Tops

The Weather Channel said Dish Network has introduced a new app from the network tailored for set-top boxes that provides viewers with “hyper-local” weather info and hourly forecasts by zip code.

The app, accessible from channel 213 on Dish’s VIP-class set-top box models (subs who use the Hopper whole-home HD-DVR can call it up by pressing the blue button on their remote controls), also provides a seven-day forecast and positions The Weather Channel feed in the upper right corner of the TV screen.

The app also supports a ‘Favorites’ feature gives viewers the ability to save other cities or zip codes, as well as severe weather alerts and radar info.  The Weather Channel continues to be offered to Dish subs in full screen model on channel 214.

“DISH launched its first weather app on set-top boxes more than nine years ago,” said Jimshade Chaudhari, Dish’s director of product management, in a statement. “Since this debut, we have continued to work with The Weather Channel to develop innovative enhancements that give our customers easy access to the best real-time weather data when they need it.”

“DISH customers have asked us for more weather information, and adding an additional app was the best way to fulfill that request,” added Jennifer Dangar, chief strategy officer and president, distribution, The Weather Channel. “Combining the most accurate hyper-local forecasts with the best severe weather coverage available will make this app a favorite for DISH customers.”
