  • GlobeCast Uplinks HD Channel For MTV International
    Transmission services provider and France Telecom subsidiary Globecast is providing uplink services for MTVNHD, the hi-def channel launched by MTV Networks International (MTVNI) this fall which carries music-based and kids’ programming. GlobeCast receives MTVNI’s HD channel, along with five MTV channels in SD, via fiber optic links at its Brookmans Park Technical Operations Center in London, U.K. From there, it is uplinked to Eutelsat’s HOT BIRD 6 satellite. more » » » 
  • Microsoft, Akamai Team On Web Video
    Software giant Microsoft and leading content delivery network (CDN) Akamai are working together to deliver high-definition video to PCs through Microsoft’s Silverlight Web video player. Microsoft has developed a new Web server technology called Internet Information Services 7.0 (IIS7.0) Smooth Streaming, which is designed to provide consumers with instant start-up times and no buffering by adapting the encoding rate of the video stream in real time based upon changes in the speed of the consumer’s broadband connection. more » » » 
  • NATAS Announces Tech Emmy Winners
    The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has announced the winners of its 60th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards. Emmys for HD related work include: Awards for “Pioneering Development of MPEG-4 AVC systems for HDTV” to Tandberg Television and DirecTV; “ongoing live global HD cinemacasting,” to the Metropolitan Opera Association; work on the development of HDMI to Silicon Image, Thomson, Toshiba, Sony, Matsushita, Hitachi, Philips, Molex, Japan Aviation Electronics (JAE) and Intel; work on the MPEG-4 AVC Standard to Video Coding Expert Group (VCEG) and Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). more » » » 
  • Study: TV's Lower On Consumer Holiday Wish Lists
    Study by Consumer Electronics Association says that consumer demand for televisions and computers have fallen in the last year, but for those that do plan on buying, HD is in. Of those who said they did plan to buy a TV set this holiday season, 85% said it would be an HDTV, and over half said it would be at least a 40-inch screen. More than a quarter (28%) of the people buying a new TV said it was to prepare for the DTV transition. more » » » 
  • MPEG-4 Rules HD World
    MPEG-4 advanced compression was a hot topic at the HD World show, as an increasing number of broadcasters, cable programmers and satellite operators are taking advantage of MPEG-4's bandwidth efficiencies over legacy MPEG-2 systems. Some are using MPEG-4 to fit HD feeds in old standard-definition slots or launch new HD services. Pay-TV networks like Starz and HBO have adopted MPEG-4 to expand their high-definition programming, using Motorola transcoders at the cable headends to convert the signals to MPEG-2 for distribution on cable systems. more » » »

    • HDTV Prices May Be As Low As They Can Go
      PC Magazine reports that the price manufacturers are paying for the panels used inside LCD TVs is approaching the cash cost the panel makers themselves pay for them. A recent report by DisplaySearch found that manufacturers are paying just about cheapest possible price for the panels, which in turn make up about 70 percent of the cost of a typical LCD TV. The report found that the price being paid for a 32-inch panel used inside an HDTV is just $223 while the actual cash cost to manufacture that same 32-inch panel is between $218 and $221. The upshot: prices LCD HD can only fall so much in the short run. more » » » 
    • Hard Times May Slow Local HD Roll Out
      TVNEWSDAY reports that despite HDTV's growing popularity, many broadcasters, particularly those in small markets, may have to postpone making the transition to local HD news given the current economic woes. "The events of the last few weeks certainly have affected those of us in the over-the-air broadcast industry," said Delbert Parks, Sinclair Broadcasting Group's VP of operations/engineering.     • WISC-TV Launches HD Newscasts
      The Badger Herald reports that WISC-TV in Madison Wisconsin has launched local newscasts in high definition TV. WISC-TV has been airing special feature stories in HD since January 2008 but starting Sunday, October 26, the station began airing up to to 10-and-a-half hours of HD television a day. Despite the small size of the Madison market, WISC-TV will be the first channel in Wisconsin to use HD. more » » » 
    • The Met Opera Offers HD Performances on the Web
      The New York Times reports that the Metropolitan Opera has started making many video and audio broadcasts available for Internet streaming on demand. The Metropolitan OperaMet Player, as the service is called, was launched on its web site on the 125th anniversary of the Met’s first show. It allows users to choose from 13 high-definition video performances, 37 standard video recordings and 120 audio broadcasts dating to 1937. The company said it planned to add performances regularly, drawing on its vast historical archives and its continuing high-definition broadcasts. more » » » 
    • Apple Ups HD TV Shows On iTunes
      Information Week reports that all four of the major networks are now offering prime-time television shows on Apple’s iTunes in high definition. In addition, the company said more than 1 million HD episodes have been sold since the format launch last month. Prime-time shows recently added in HD include Grey's Anatomy and Lost from ABC, CSI and CSI: Miami from CBS, Bones and Prison Break airing on Fox, and Heroes and The Office from NBC Universal. Apple has a total of 70 prime-time comedies and dramas available on iTunes. more » » »
