    • Operators, Networks Step Up Diversity Efforts
      The cable industry has long strived for diversity, inclusion and multiculturalism in the workplace. But executives agree that over the last year and a half — as the nation followed a historic presidential primary race between an African-American and a woman — operators and networks have ramped up their recruitment and career-building efforts. NAMIC President Kathy Johnson said Hispanics are still under-represented and that the representation is much slower in coming at the senior management level, especially at senior vice president and above. “That is our concern,” she said. more » » » 
    • Time Warner Cable Pushes Ad Spend Targeting Hispanics
      Time Warner Cable is pouring on consumer marketing spending, which includes buying more commercials on local broadcast channels to reach nonsubscribers, chief operating officer Landel Hobbs said at the Merrill Lynch’s Media Fall Preview Conference (Sept. 9) in California.
      Hobbs added that the cable operator is conducting extensive data analysis to find where marketing spend pays off by audience segment -- Hispanics are currently a prime target -- and geography, where New York, Los Angeles and Texas are getting heavy spending. more » » »

    • Univison, Televisa Head To Court
      Reuters is reporting that Univision Communications Inc. and Mexico’s Grupo Televisa are scheduled to show up in court Oct. 14 for their pending trial over royalty payments. The trial has been postponed twice from its original start date last spring, prompting analysts and legal observers to conclude that the companies were trying to reach a settlement out of court. more » » » 


      MOVERS AND SHAKERS

      Andre Fernández, chief financial officer at NBC-owned Telemundo, is leaving his post to join Journal Communications, the Milwaukee-based media company, succeeding Paul Bonaiuto, who announced in May that he intends to retire as executive vice president and chief financial officer this year. Fernández’s appointment is effective Oct. 20. Journal is the owner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 35 radio stations and 12 TV stations in Milwaukee.

      Renán Almendarez Coello, the popular radio host known as El Cucuy, on Sept. 15 signed off of Los Angeles KLAX-FM (La Raza) after five years at the Spanish Broadcasting Systems-owned station. He will continue production of the Azteca America TV show Azte pa’ca and work on building up his own Spanish-language radio network.

      Puerto Rican journalist Rubén Sánchez has joined Miami-based CaribeVision as host of Rubén Sánchez Directo, which began broadcasting Sept. 8 in Puerto Rico, Miami and New York. The daily show is the first program produced entirely in Puerto Rico by LatinUno and Caribevision.

      Johanna Guerra has been promoted to senior vice president of network news at Telemundo, where she will be charged with supervising all news programming for the network. Guerra, who is also in charge of overseeing Telemundo’s domestic and international news bureaus, will report to President Don Browne. Prior to joining Telemundo Guerra worked at MSNBC as a producer out of the cable network’s Secaucus, NJ, studios.
