Top StoryVerimatrix Dishes Up IPTV for Cable

Verimatrix is betting that some small and midsize cable operators will be interested in diving into Internet Protocol TV, a technology that to date has been associated with telephone companies.

The San Diego-based provider of content-security technologies has struck a partnership with GoBackTV, a startup that has developed a system to let IP video traffic bypass a cable-modem termination system. This creates an "IPTV overlay" on the cable network that doesn’t burden the CMTS with bandwidth-intensive video traffic, according to Verimatrix.

Verimatrix’s pitch: Using IPTV on existing cable plant could provide a cost-effective option for operators that have not yet introduced digital video to offer a premium tier of new channels or video-on-demand.

Verizon Communications’ FiOS TV service is now available to more than 17,000 households in north Pinellas County, in the communities of St. George, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs, going up against cable providers Bright House Networks and Knology.

Verizon said it has deployed nearly 1.4 million feet of fiber in Pinellas County to date, and more than 51 million feet of fiber in its Florida service territory. FiOS TV is available to more than 520,000 households in Hillsborough, Pasco, Sarasota, Manatee and Pinellas counties.

The company has exclusive U.S. broadband-distribution rights for Television Broadcast Limited (TVB) of Hong Kong, and its channel lineup also includes Hong Kong’s i-Cable News and i-Cable Entertainment News, Fashion TV-Asia, Setanta Sports Channel and China’s Pearl River Channel.

• IPTV middleware vendor Orca Interactive is delivering Web TV technology to Blockbuster Israel, which plans to provide an IPTV-ready set-top box to enable TV connectivity from the PC and other services in early 2008.

AT&T U-verse was named “best business strategy” for multichannel video programming distributors in 2007 by Stratecast, a subsidiary of consulting company Frost & Sullivan.
