Canada's Bell Aliant selected Harmonic's DiviCom Electra 5400 standard-definition encoders for an MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) upgrade that enables the telco to enhance its Aliant TV video service. Bell Aliant will use the encoders in its headend facility in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Verizon launched 75 new channels, including 55 additional high-definition (HD) channels, to FiOS TV customers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, for a total of 85 HD channels.

Verizon received a 15-year cable franchise from Stafford County, Va., under which the telco is required to make FiOS TV service available to all households in an initial service area in the southernmost areas of the county – including Falmouth and Stafford – within three years. The company plans to begin offering FiOS TV later this summer.

The town of Woodway, Wash., voted to grant Verizon a video franchise Aug. 18, becoming the ninth community in the state to authorize the telco's TV service. The company plans to begin offering FiOS TV in Washington State later this year.

China Central Television (CCTV) launched an IPTV service pilot in Beijing in time for the start of the Olympic Games using 80 Envivio 4Caster encoders.
