For NCC Spot-Sales Corps, News Makes News

National Cable Communications last week became the national spot-sales representative for two more local-news channels — LNC5 in Norfolk, Va., and Las Vegas One — to bring its total to 19 services reaching a combined 13 million cable subscribers.

LNC5 serves 434,000 subscribers or 90% of the cable homes in Norfolk, while Las Vegas One reaches 407,000, or 92% of that DMA's cable households, said NCC director of news sales Deborah Cuffaro.

Both services are joint ventures of MSO Cox Communications Inc. and broadcaster Belo Corp.

Such news channels "provide a true local connection, while also offering sponsorship/entitlement opportunities designed to creatively address an advertiser's strategic goals," she said.

Of the 19 local or regional news channels now represented by NCC, eight are Cox services and eight Time Warner Cable services; Belo is involved in four of those MSOs' ventures.

Cuffaro is a veteran of the local news channel wars, which a few years ago saw NCC and RASCO fight tooth-and-nail to represent the various news channels across the country.

She had headed Regional News Rep as senior vice president until Cablevision Systems Corp.'s Rainbow Advertising Sales Corp. folded it in, taking its spot sales in-house in 2001. In the spring of that year, RNR represented 25 news channels with a combined 25 million subscribers.
