Law & Order Boosts TNT Again

9/16/2003 9:09 AM Eastern

In a virtual repeat of the prior week, Turner Network Television nipped ESPN
in household primetime ratings Sept. 8-14 but ceded the top spot among the key
adult-demographic groups to the total sports network.

TNT, boosted again by the Law & Order franchise, averaged a 2.4
household rating during the aforementioned period, edging out ESPN’s 2.3,
according to an ABC Cable Networks Group analysis of Nielsen Media Research
data.

Lifetime Television was third with a 2.1, followed by a 1.8 apiece for
Nickelodeon and Disney Channel.

Rounding out the top 10: Cartoon Network with a 1.7; USA Network with a 1.5;
The Learning Channel at a 1.3; and TBS Superstation, Fox News Channel, Sci Fi
Channel and Courtroom Television Network, all with 1.1 averages.

On a total-day basis, Nick was first with a 1.4 household average, ahead of
TNT’s 1.3. Lifetime and Disney were next, each with a 1.2, while Cartoon
averaged a 1.1 over the 24-hour measurement, according to the ABC Cable
analysis

ESPN -- riding the strength of its coverage of the National Football League
game between the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears Sept. 14, the week’s
most-watched program -- tackled the top spot among adults 18-34 (749,000 of
those viewers), 18-49 (1.52 million) and 25-54 (1.52 million), according to a
Turner Entertainment Research analysis of Nielsen data.

TNT was second in all those categories, capturing 533,000, 1.37 million and
1.45 million of those respective groups on average.

MTV: Music Television was third among the younger-adult grouping, while
Lifetime showed with the other audience sets.

ESPN’s presentation of Vikings-Bears posted an 8.7 household average, while
its NFL PrimeTime lead-in Sept. 14 was tied with Lifetime movie Sex
& the Single Mom
for second place, each with a 4.0 mark.

Of the 25 highest-rated shows of the week, TNT’s L&O accounted for
one-fifth of those entries, headed by a 3.5 Sept. 8 from 9 p.m.-10
p.m.
