AT & T Nixes Call For Joint Review

4/16/2000 8:00 PM Eastern

Las Vegas-AT & T Corp. last Thursday rejected a call by public-interest groups for the Federal Communications Commission to combine into one proceeding the review of AT & T's merger with MediaOne Group Inc. and America Online Inc.'s merger with Time Warner Inc.

"Merger reviews involve the unique facts of particular deals proposed by specific parties. Each should be evaluated on its own merits without undue delay or distraction," an AT & T spokeswoman said.

The request was made in an April 11 motion filed with the FCC by the Media Access Project, the Consumers Union, the Consumer Federation of America and the Center for Media Education. They said consolidation was necessary because after merging with MediaOne, AT & T would have substantial ownership stakes in cable's leading high-speed Internet services, Excite@Home Corp. and Time Warner's Road Runner.
