Speedy Start for Sci Fi’s 'Atlantis,’ TNT’s 'The Grid’

Two of basic-cable’s highly touted original entries, Sci Fi Channel’s original Stargate Atlantis and TNT’s limited series The Grid, came out of the blocks with strong ratings performances.

Stargate Atlantis blasted off into a new Nielsen stratosphere, delivering the most viewers and highest ratings of any series in Sci Fi’s history. The two-hour debut of the Stargate SG-1 spinoff delivered a 3.2 household rating and some 4.19 million viewers on July 16 from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research data.

In addition to scoring with a record number of viewers, the show was Sci Fi’s all-time best series in reaching adults 18 to 49 and 25 to 54. That performance easily surpassed the record-setting season-opening ratings of Stargate SG-1’s eighth season, which recorded a 2.4 rating and 3.22 million viewers the week before.

TNT’s The Grid notched a 3.6 household rating during its July 19 premiere from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., finding 4.33 million viewers.

The series, which examines terrorist activities, was also a dynamo against key demographics, topping The WB and UPN among adults 18 to 34, adults 18 to 49, adults 25 to 54, women 25 to 54, men 18 to 34, men 18 to 49, men 25 to 54, plus households and viewers.
