OpenTV Signs Motorola1/10/1999 7:00 PM Eastern
Las Vegas -- OpenTV Inc. CEO Jan Steenkamp announced last
week that Motorola Inc. will embed OpenTV's operating system software in its
"Streamaster" -- code-named "Blackbird" -- digital set-top boxes.
Motorola will pay OpenTV a per-unit royalty for all
OpenTV-based systems that are shipped, the companies said in a prepared statement.
The "Streamline" architecture will support a
number of high-tech applications, including Internet-protocol telephony, Internet access,
3-D graphics, digital video and electronic commerce. The first Streamline products with
OpenTV technology are expected to ship next year.
Steenkamp made the announcement at a press reception at the
Consumer Electronics Show here. Also on hand was EchoStar Communications Corp., which
announced an agreement with OpenTV in October.
