Cox Boosts Net Links with Peering Deal

1/08/2003 4:18 AM Eastern

Cox Communications Inc. beefed up its Internet links for data service,
signing a collocation deal with Equinix Inc. to provide direct interconnections
at three of its Web-peering hubs.

That will extend Cox's network into Equinix's "Internet Business Exchange"
centers in Dallas; Washington, D.C.; and Los Angeles, with an option to expand
into other major market centers.

Equinix's 15 centers in the United States and abroad provide a single
location for Internet providers to directly link to major carrier networks,
rather than forcing them to create individual interconnection points.

The Equinix deal will therefore make it easier for Cox's data traffic to flow
to and from its cable-data network, while cutting interconnection costs.

"Equinix has assembled a valuable mix of leading Internet companies that
represent an attractive opportunity for Cox to partner with in our
broadband-delivery network," said Randy Kinsey, Cox's manager of network
engineering and architecture, in a release.

"Equinix's IBX centers offer Cox an ideal environment to interconnect with
its strategic partners without barriers to growth and scalability," Kinsey
added.
