Ferree Pressures Cable on DTV

4/08/2002 4:43 AM Eastern

Federal Communications Commission Media Bureau chief Ken Ferree told
reporters Friday that the cable industry would jeopardize its good relations
with FCC officials if it failed to embrace chairman Michael Powell's
digital-transition plan.

'I don't think they do themselves any favor at the commission by not being
proactive players in the digital transition,' he said.

Ferree added that the agency's review of the merger between Comcast Corp. and
AT&T Broadband wouldn't be harmed if it fell behind on Powell's plan.

But he said it was within cable's power to avoid FCC hassles, adding, 'The
best way to do that is to be good actors, essentially, in the business and not
to be stonewalling the transition that the other industries involved are moving
with.'
