Roller-Coaster Ride Seen for Set-Top Shipments

11/20/2003 7:33 AM Eastern

According to a new study, U.S. digital set-top-box shipments are forecast to dip slightly in 2003 but recover in 2004 in response to an improving economy.

IMS Research’s "The Worldwide Market for Digital Set-Top Boxes & iDTVs" estimated digital set-top shipments for 2003 at 15.3 million, down 2.3% from the 2002 total.

But IMS sees that number jumping to close to 16 million for 2004.

"U.S. digital set-top-box shipments suffered in 2003 mainly from lower consumer demand for digital services resulting from the tightened economy," IMS analyst Alison Bogle said in a release.

"However, now that the U.S. economic situation is improving, IMS Research forecasts that the market will grow again in 2004 and will continue to grow through the next several years," she added.
