Rainbow Media Holdings Inc. and Primedia Inc. said they would launch their
joint-venture Web site targeting New Yorkers in September.
The site, www.newyorkmetro.com, will contain content from Primedia's New
York magazine and Rainbow's MetroChannels programming service.
The site will debut about one year later than the companies had originally
said it would. It will contain less MetroChannels content than originally
expected, and it won't offer users the ability to buy tickets to events at Radio
City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden until some time after the launch, New
York Metro general manager Craig Unger said Friday.
Rainbow and Primedia also said Friday that their
joint-venture company purchased RexHome.com
Inc. An Intranet serving about 230
building-management companies in New York operated by EdificeRex.com will be
integrated into New York Metro, Unger said.
The Intranet service offers everything from the ability to place work orders
with building superintendents to local message boards, he added.
New York Metro will also contain content from About.com Inc. In December,
Rainbow and Primedia laid off most of the staff working on the joint-venture
site, later saying they would rely more on the resources of About.com, which
Primedia acquired last year.
The site will contain listings of 400 restaurants and bars, and it will
eventually allow users to make reservations online, Unger said.
Initially, New York is leading the ad-sales effort for the site. But
Unger said the sales staffs from MetroChannels and New York would
eventually jointly sell advertising for New York Metro, MetroChannels and New
The New York Metro operation will move into a building owned by Rainbow
parent Cablevision Systems Corp. this fall. It will also house the MetroChannels
headquarters, Unger said.
Primedia and Cablevision had kicked around many names for the site, including
NewYorkMagnet.com and AboutNewYork.com.
