Ameritech Gains 40th Mich. Franchise1/31/1999 7:00 PM Eastern
Grosse Ile, Mich. -- Ameritech New Media signed its 40th
cable franchise in Michigan last week when it came to terms with the city, an island
community in the middle of the Detroit River.
The video arm of Ameritech Corp. inked a 15-year deal with
the community, which sits seven miles south of Detroit and which is currently served by
Comcast Corp., Michigan's largest MSO.
"Cable-TV consumers in Grosse Ile will join their
neighbors in other downriver communities as they enjoy the benefits of competition, which
brings new services, more channels, better reception and more stable rates," said
Donna Garofano, ANM's vice president of public affairs, in a statement.
ANM already offers its Americast service in the adjacent
communities of Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Riverview, Southgate and Trenton.
Michigan is now ANM's largest cluster, with 600,000
households and 1.5 million residents under franchise, followed by the Columbus, Ohio,
area, where the company has 530,000 households and 1.15 million residents under contract.
In terms of subscribers, ANM has an estimated total of 200,000.
ANM spokesman Geoff Potter said 34 out of the
company's 40 communities under franchise in the Detroit suburbs are up and running,
with the 35th scheduled for sometime this month.
