Powell, Other FCC Picks Confirmed

5/24/2001 11:53 AM Eastern

The Senate Commerce Committee voted unanimously Thursday to confirm Federal
Communications Commission chairman Michael Powell for a second five-year term at
the agency.

The 17-0 vote, delayed several hours by Sen. Jim Jeffords' (R-Vt.) decision
to bolt the Republican Party, occurred in an unusual session near the Senate
floor, and not in the committee's normal meeting room in the Russell
Building.

The panel also unanimously approved President Bush's three other picks for
the FCC: Republicans Kevin Martin and Kathleen Abernathy and Democrat Michael
Copps.

All four nominees now await confirmation by the full Senate.

And the panel approved unanimously the nomination of Timothy J. Muris to be
chairman of the Federal Trade Commission.
