PowerTV, Spyglass Ink Software Deal

Cupertino, Calif. -- PowerTV Inc., the set-top
operating-system vendor tapped by Time Warner Cable for the digital set-tops that it will
deploy this year, licensed Spyglass Corp.'s Web-browser technology last week.

Spyglass' browser will act as a "code
foundation" for PowerTV's development of an HTML (hypertext markup language)
engine, executives said last week.

This means that content developers will be able to use
standard Web tools to create applications for cable operators.

Bow Rodgers, chief operating officer of PowerTV, said the
licensing arrangement "gives PowerTV a strategic edge in attracting third-party
developers to write applications that take advantage of the strengths of our operating

He added that the next wave of applications driving
interactive TV will be electronic program guides, video-on-demand and Web-leveraged
applications like e-mail, e-commerce, Webcasting, network games, interactive ads and Web

PowerTV's software is slated to ride on
Scientific-Atlanta Inc.'s Explorer 2000 digital set-tops, which are currently
earmarked for use by nine MSOs in the United States and Canada.
