4/05/2001 10:34 AM Eastern

Thomson Multimedia, the maker of RCA-branded consumer electronics, said it
has shipped its 1 millionth cable modem based on the interoperable Data Over
Cable Service Interface Specification.

About 800,000 of those can be upgraded to the more advanced DOCSIS 1.1 spec
via a software upgrade, the company added.

On the domestic MSO front, Thomson's cable modems are offered through
AT&T Broadband, Comcast Corp., Charter Communications Inc., Time Warner
Cable, High Speed Access Corp. and Adelphia Communications Corp.

Thomson also sells the gear via retail relationships with RadioShack Corp.,
Circuit City Stores Inc. and The Wiz. The company did not disclose how many of
the modems it has shipped were tagged for retail sale.

The company also makes cable modems based on the EuroDOCSIS spec, and it said
about 20 percent of its modems are shipped to MSOs based in Europe and Asia.

According to Kinetic Strategies Inc., more than 6 million DOCSIS cable modems
were shipped by the end of last year.

As of Dec. 31, 2000, Motorola Broadband Communications Sector led DOCSIS
market share at 38.1 percent, followed by 3Com Corp. (17.2 percent), Toshiba
America Consumer Products (13.2 percent) and Thomson (11.4
percent).
