ESPN Adding Rome, Ice1/08/2003 1:17 AM Eastern
Hollywood -- Continuing to boost its original programming, ESPN will once
again add veteran sportscaster Jim Rome to its roster, and the network is in
development on its third telepic.
The total-sports network announced at the Television Critics Association
winter press tour here Tuesday that it will bow Rome Is Burning, a
weekly, live one-hour sports-talk show, May 6 at 7 p.m. The program will
originate from Los Angeles and showcase Rome's opinions, rants and debates,
including guest stars.
Rome -- who had been serving as host of The Last Word with Jim Rome on
Fox Sports Net since 1997 -- will also offer his insights via weekly one-minute
editorials entitled "Rome Alone" on the network's signature SportsCenter
show. Rome hosted ESPN2's Talk2 in 1993 and 1994.
ESPN also announced that it is in the early stages of development on The
Ice Bowl, a movie about the legendary 1967 National Football League title
game in which the Green Bay Packers topped the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 in frigid
conditions on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis.
The film will not only look at the contest, but at famous late coaches Vince
Lombardi and Tom Landry and the ski-masked fans, as well as the cultural
