Sens. Seek GAO Study on Cable-DBS Prices

3/07/2002 2:36 AM Eastern

Sens. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) and Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) Wednesday asked the General
Accounting Office to study price competition between cable operators and
direct-broadcast satellite carriers.

The lawmakers want the GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, to determine
the impact on cable rates when DBS carriers offer local TV signals in a
market.

About 42 local TV markets currently receive local TV signals from the two
leading DBS companies, EchoStar Communications Corp. and DirecTV Inc.

The lawmakers said they want to test whether carriage of local TV signals
makes DBS a more formidable competitor to cable.
