OpenTV Adds Gaming, Customized Content

1/23/2001 7:46 AM Eastern

In an effort to make its set-top-box middleware more attractive to cable and
satellite operators, OpenTV Corp. cut two deals to expand its
interactive-television-content inventory.

In the first deal, OpenTV said it will incorporate content and services from
Mixed Signals Technologies Inc., a company that currently offers interactive
versions of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune to Microsoft WebTV
Networks Inc. and AOLTV customers.

The companies said they plan to offer programmers and advertisers the ability
to add enhancements and interactive game shows over network-operator
systems.

Separately, OpenTV said it will bolster its interactive-TV platform by
integrating customized content from InfoSpace Inc., a developer of digital
white/yellow pages, city guides and personal finance and gaming
applications.

OpenTV's software has been installed in more than 11 million digital boxes
worldwide, but it has yet to gain much deployment traction with U.S. cable
operators. To date, US Media Group is the lone domestic MSO to sign a deployment
deal with the middleware firm.
