AT&T, AT&T Broadband Compete in Ill.

4/23/2002 5:07 AM Eastern

AT&T Corp. said it will begin offering residential telephony in Illinois
in June by leasing SBC Ameritech's pipe.

The launch is somewhat confusing for consumers, as the company's AT&T
Broadband MSO unit already offers circuit-switched telephony in the state,
branded as 'AT&T Digital Phone.'

The launch shows that as AT&T Broadband prepares to merge with Comcast
Corp., the cable unit and its telco parent are pursuing their own local
telephony products, which will compete head-to-head.

'We view AT&T's offer like any other offer in the marketplace,' AT&T
Broadband spokeswoman Sarah Eder said. 'We can beat any price in the
market.'
