Frodo Gets Some `Real' Promotion1/19/2001 3:55 AM Eastern
Gandalf, Frodo, Samwise and the evil Sauron and Gollum have finally made the
jump from Middle Earth into cyberspace.
New Line Cinema has struck an exclusive partnership with RealNetworks Inc. to
promote the studio's anticipated release of a movie trilogy based on J.R.R.
Tolkien's hobbit fantasy, The Lord of the Rings.
The two companies have created a Lord of the Rings 'RealChannel' that
will serve as the exclusive online-video destination for the premieres of all
trailers, interviews and behind-the-scenes materials for the movies.
RNI's free 'RealPlayer' application will feature the channel. The clips will
also be made available at New Line's trilogy Web site, http://www.lordoftherings.net/index_flat.html.
New Line and RNI plan to update the content weekly.
The deal is expected to last through 2004, long enough for the trilogy to
complete its theatrical and DVD/home-video releases, the companies said.
The Fellowship of the Ring, the first of the trio, should be released in
time for Christmas 2001, followed by The Two Towers (2002) and The
Return of the King (2003).
